My Music Mural - Installation Design

Design Challenge:
My high school was a very blank canvas, so my senior year of high school I embarked to remedy this. I made appointments with the principle and the school board and pitched the idea of beautifying the school with six different mural proposals. They approved my pitch and gave me funding for one mural. I wanted it to reflect my experiences at the school and inspire the next generation. By choosing the hallway of the music department, because of my Marching Band experience, I selected a space of 9’x49’ and went to work.
Solution:
The solution found me working every lunch hour of my senior year in the CAD classroom designing this mural on paper, trace paper, Microsoft Paint and in AutoCAD (because I had not been introduced to adobe). After a composition had been compiled I worked with a local sign company in my hometown. We printed the black figures using black vinyl cutouts adapted from CAD to Adobe. These life size prints were applied with an adhesive and a heat gun. The next challenge was to incorporate the orange swirls. By using an old over head projector, provided by the school, I projected intricate orange designs and traced them onto the wall. After this process was complete I then spent two weeks of my summer mixing and hand painting it in.
